For not-for-profit entities, whether in the public or private sector, the future economic benefits are also used to provide goods and services in accordance with the entity's objectives. Future economic benefits me synonymous with the notion of service potential and are used as a refcrence also to service potential. Future economic benefits can be described as the scarce capacity to provide benefits to the entities that use them and is common to all assets irrespective of their physical or other form.

A Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) is a plan that documents service standards (set by the service provider) as well as an operations, maintenance and renewals strategy for achieving these standards.
